Kids, ages 8-12, who like to read will love the Kids Book Club.
Led by Cyndi Shutt, the club meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 4:15 to 5:00 p.m. at the Main Library and each meeting includes a brief discussion of that month's book, a fun activity, and a snack.
And joining the club doesn't mean that you have to read each month's selection. Children are free to pick and choose which books they read and which meetings they attend.
How do you choose the selections?
I try to pick newer books that kids can relate to. I’ll sprinkle in a classic here and there as well. I look at books that have received starred reviews or are popular picks for book clubs for kids. I prefer to pick books that also have an audio version that can be followed along with the book for struggling readers.
What can children expect when they attend one of your meetings?
FUN! This isn’t your typical book club, this is about learning to love books! I start with an ice breaker game, discuss the book over snacks with some interesting facts about something related to the book. I end with a game and/or craft. It really is a fun time!
What would you say to a kid who is thinking about attending a meeting but isn’t sure if it’s for them?
Try it! Even if you didn’t like a particular book, you will enjoy having fun with other children! There is no commitment to attend the next book club, so if it’s not for you, there is no obligation.
Do you have to attend every meeting, or is it OK to pick and choose which discussions you attend?
You do not need to attend every meeting. If a particular book isn’t for you, feel free to skip it and try the next one.
Why do you enjoy facilitating your club?
It is very rewarding to see the kids light up when they have enjoyed a book. They almost always have a favorite character, whether good or bad, they want to talk about. I love giving them just enough push to get them discussing a book deeper and have them run with it! I always look forward to planning the next month’s discussion!
